Planting traditional Chinese medicine herbs has become a popular project in recent years. Some ordinary agricultural growers have started to try planting medicinal materials, and Huanglian is one of them. It has high medicinal value, a wide market, and high economic benefits. However, many farmers are new to Huanglian cultivation, so they are not very familiar with the technical management of Huanglian planting. In fact, just like grape crops, good fertilization, pruning, and pest and disease control should also be done during the Huanglian planting process.
  Huanglian Planting Environment
Huanglian is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine herb and has certain requirements for its growing environment. Generally, Huanglian should be planted in shaded forest land, preferably under trees that are about 3.3 meters tall, with a slope of 20-25 degrees.
Huanglian has low soil requirements. It is best to choose soil that is rich in organic matter, has deep humus, and is loose on top and firm below. Heavy clay and dead yellow mud or white eel mud are not suitable.
Before planting Huanglian, the area should be cleaned up by removing fallen leaves, broken branches, weeds, etc., to avoid spreading pests and diseases in the soil.
  Huanglian Fertilization Needs
Huanglian also has certain fertilizer needs. Base fertilizer should be applied at the time of planting. Thin pig manure water or decomposed vegetable cake water can be used to irrigate the seedlings, or finely crushed compost or stable manure can be spread at about 1000 kilograms per acre. Fertilization should be done once in September-October of the same year, and once after seed collection in the 2nd to 5th years, and once in September-October of the 2nd to 4th years, totaling 8 times.
Usually, balanced water-soluble fertilizers can be used for Huanglian fertilization, or 10 kilograms of urea and 20-30 kilograms of calcium phosphate can be mixed with fine soil or fine compost and spread.
  Huanglian Pest and Disease Control
Huanglian can also be affected by pests and diseases, mainly powdery mildew, grubs, and mole crickets. To control pests and diseases, appropriate light can be increased to reduce the likelihood of disease occurrence. At the same time, physical control methods can be used to catch pests. For example, deer and pheasants feed on Huanglian seeds and flowers, so fencing should be done to reduce damage.
