On May 7, China News reported that the cultivation of Huanglian in Shizhu County, Chongqing, has a history of over 300 years, making it a nationally renowned "Huanglian hometown." The Huanglian produced here belongs to the authentic "Weilian" variety and is also known as "Jizhua Lian" due to its resemblance to chicken claws. The Shizhu products made from "Weilian" are of excellent quality and are well received in the market.
Huanglian is used medicinally from its rhizome, characterized by its bitter and cold properties, primarily containing berberine. Recent pharmacological studies have found that berberine has functions such as clearing heat and drying dampness, relieving fire and detoxifying, regulating heart rate, antibacterial and insecticidal properties, treating malaria, and lowering blood sugar, and it also has certain efficacy in treating some tumors.
Huanglian is deeply ingrained in people's hearts due to its "bitterness," and Shizhu is famous worldwide because of "Huanglian." The Tujia farmers have lived in the Huanglian hometown for generations, benefiting from the bitterness of Huanglian, which nurtures them and enriches their understanding of Huanglian: "Only by enduring the bitter can one become a person of worth."
Fertile fields produce good medicine, and lush forests yield Huanglian. The main production of Shizhu Huanglian is in Shizhu Huangshui, where the mountains are continuous, the peaks are lush, and the land is fertile, making it naturally suitable for Huanglian growth. The Huanglian here is known for its "thick branches, fleshy roots, long strips, bright colors, and high content of effective ingredients."
In 1991, Huangshui Town established the national Huanglian GAP demonstration base and built the largest Huanglian trading market in China, with brand certifications such as "Geographical Protection of Huanglian Origin Products" and "Geographical Indication Products and Certification Trademark of Shizhu Huanglian."
Currently, Huanglian has become Shizhu's business card, and Shizhu Huanglian has become a famous brand of "local medicinal materials," accounting for 60% of the total Huanglian production in China and 40% of the total Huanglian production in the world.
Today, in Huangshui, a Huanglian cultural exhibition hall has been specially built, allowing visitors to enter the Shizhu Huanglian cultural exhibition hall to learn about this "world's first bitterness, the first prescription for clearing heat" and to understand this "bitter" culture.
The Shizhu Huanglian cultural exhibition hall is located within the Huanglian Cultural Square in Shizhu Huangshui Town. Upon entering the Huanglian cultural exhibition hall, the rich atmosphere of Huanglian "bitter" culture greets you... Upon entering the exhibition hall, the first thing you see is the image wall of Huanglian "bitter" culture.
Here, everyone says Huanglian is bitter, yet bitterness drives people to strive and promotes innovation. "Bitterness" is a culture, a long-standing Tujia culture passed down through generations; "bitterness" is a spirit, a spirit of hard work and pioneering that embodies the Shizhu spirit.
The exhibition hall uses "Dream Seeking, Dream Pursuing, Dream Fulfilling" as a clue to showcase the revitalization of the entire Huangshui Huanglian cultural industry... From the "historical origins" recorded in the Shizhu County Chronicle about Huanglian to the "folklore" about Huanglian, and then to the "standardized planting process," "professional sayings about Huanglian planting," and "medicinal value," it presents the "dream-seeking journey" of the Huanglian industry from historical and modern planting perspectives.
