Characteristics of Huanglian Morphology

The rhizome is yellow, often branched, densely growing many fibrous roots. The leaves have long petioles; the leaf blades are slightly leathery, ovate-triangular, up to 10 centimeters wide, fully divided into three parts, with the central fully divided segment being ovate-rhombic, 3-8 centimeters long and 2-4 centimeters wide, with a sharply pointed tip, having a slender petiole 0.8-1.8 centimeters long, with 3 or 5 pairs of deeply pinnately divided segments, the deepest divisions on the underside, with deeply divided segments spaced 2-6 millimeters apart, the edges bearing fine, sharp serrations, the lateral fully divided segments having petioles 1.5-5 millimeters long, obliquely ovate, shorter than the central fully divided segment, with unequal double deep divisions, the leaf veins raised on both sides, except for short soft hairs along the veins on the surface, the rest hairless; the petiole is 5-12 centimeters long and hairless.
The flower stalks are 1-2, 12-25 centimeters high; the dichotomous or multi-branched umbel has 3-8 flowers; the bracts are lanceolate, with three or five deeply pinnate divisions; the sepals are yellow-green, elongated oval, 9-12.5 millimeters long and 2-3 millimeters wide; the petals are linear or linear-lanceolate, 5-6.5 millimeters long, gradually pointed at the tip, with a nectar groove in the center; there are about 20 stamens, the anthers about 1 millimeter long, and the filaments 2-5 millimeters long; there are 8-12 carpels, and the style is slightly outwardly curved.
The capsule is 6-8 millimeters long, with a stalk approximately equal in length; there are 7-8 seeds, elongated oval, about 2 millimeters long and about 0.8 millimeters wide, brown. Flowers bloom from February to March, and fruits mature from April to June.
