The cultivation of traditional Chinese medicinal materials has a certain history in our country. Due to the increasing market demand, many regions are now vigorously promoting the cultivation of these medicinal materials. Looking at the current domestic market, the price of traditional Chinese medicine is gradually rising, which naturally boosts the enthusiasm of farmers for cultivation. However, due to different environmental conditions, the types of medicinal materials cultivated in each region also vary. Especially in places like Sichuan and Guizhou, the climate conditions are more suitable for growing Huanglian. As a very precious medicinal material, Huanglian has a high cultivation value. However, to achieve high yields and obtain higher profits from Huanglian cultivation, farmers must understand the basic management methods in the fields. So how should this be done? What should be paid attention to during cultivation?
When sowing Huanglian, it is essential to control the corresponding temperature in the initial stage. After sowing, some ground cover such as plastic film or straw can be used to avoid unsuitable temperatures affecting the growth of Huanglian seedlings. During the seedling stage, it is also important to observe the moisture in the soil and to water frequently to promote faster growth of the seedlings. Once the seedlings have grown a certain number of leaves, attention should be paid to starting the thinning work, which aims to allow Huanglian to grow better. At the same time, before the seedlings emerge, to promote more vigorous growth, it is necessary to establish a shading shed to effectively block sunlight, preventing excessive light from limiting seedling growth or even causing them to wither.
When Huanglian reaches a certain growth stage, the management focus should be on replanting. During growth, some seedlings grow quickly, but there will also be some relatively weak seedlings, and even some may suffer from diseases. At this time, timely handling and replanting are necessary, after which planting can begin. Generally, when transplanting seedlings, attention should also be paid to spacing them evenly to avoid gaps.
After the seedlings are planted, it is necessary to check their growth regularly. If any adverse conditions arise, timely replanting should be done to ensure consistent growth among the seedlings. The growth and management of Huanglian during the seedling stage are quite important, as they directly relate to the overall growth in the future. Therefore, as a grower, management during this stage must be done well to avoid limiting seedling growth or creating potential hazards for future growth.
During the seedling stage of Huanglian, it is essential to pay attention to tillage work. Generally, about five tillage operations should be performed throughout its growth stage. Especially after the seedlings are transplanted, two tillage operations should be conducted to avoid affecting their growth. Particularly after the rainy season, due to increased moisture, the soil may become clumpy. If reasonable tillage is performed, it can effectively prevent poor soil aeration, which is less likely to harm the roots of Huanglian and can improve permeability, benefiting Huanglian's growth. When there are many weeds in the soil, it is also important to quickly remove these weeds, as they can easily affect Huanglian's growth and compete for nutrients.
Conversely, if weeds are not removed in a timely manner during this stage, it will lead to nutrient depletion, which is extremely detrimental to Huanglian's growth. When Huanglian enters the seedling growth stage, reasonable fertilization is also very important. Usually, during the initial fertilization, the main fertilizer used is farmyard manure, and it is important to control the concentration of water and fertilizer, preferably using fertilizers with lower concentrations to avoid root scorching due to excessive fertilizer.
After the seedlings are transplanted, farmyard manure can be used once. When entering the mid-growth stage, a moderate amount of nitrogen fertilizer can be added. During this stage, the use of fertilizer should be based on the growth condition. If growth is poor or not vigorous enough, fertilization can be done in small amounts multiple times. Since Huanglian has a high demand for fertilizer during growth, it is essential to pay attention to reasonable fertilization at each stage to meet Huanglian's basic growth needs.
Since Huanglian does not require too much sunlight during its growth, it is important to build a shading shed to promote better growth. The purpose of building a shading shed is to better regulate the overall light intensity. Especially during the initial growth stage of Huanglian, its demand for sunlight is not high, so timely shading treatment should be performed, and the growth of Huanglian should be monitored to ensure it is normal.
